Meaningful Accomplishments

Most internships are simply busy work. At Geon, our interns are challenged with real-world problems derived from actual customers that range from software-defined radio development to machine learning applied to radio frequency applications. Over the past few years, Geon interns have contributed to several meaningful projects and created presentations to showcase their accomplishments.

WIFI DETECTION

Develop an 802.11ac detector to be deployed on a Qualcomm RB5 drone

SPECTROGRAM WEBAPP

Graphically display RF data from the drone in real time on a website accessible by the lab computer

REDHAWK JSON-XML ADAPTER

Create tool with command-line arguments for converting JSON and XML files. Integrate tool into REDHAWK VSCode extension

DRONE 5G INTEGRATION

RB5 Platform offers a mobile platform for data collection and deployment

COLORIZING GRAYSCALE IMAGES

Receive grayscale tiles as 8-bit single channel grayscale images, need to be colorized as “heatmaps” for useful human observation, focus on stronger signals.

RDMA NETWORKING

Use RDMA to bypass the kernel networking stack, use networking hardware directly, minimize data copying, and improve networking performance.

CONTAINER ORCHESTRATION

Use containers to extend a project, automate tests, and allow containers to “fail gracefully.”

TDOA USER INTERFACE

Clean up user interface to improve usability, look and feel, move customization from terminal to UI, make hard-coded properties editable from UI.

FINS-PY

Develop python package ‘fins-py’ as “runtime” interface, execute the same operations as fins-sw and fins-sw-devmem without requiring recompiling.

FINS USER INTERFACE

Create an app with the ability to update a JSON file using UI. Use Qt to create the UI with a C++ backend which can update a JSON file.

WORKING WITH REDHAWK

Update the Yocto version for REDHAWK from Rocko (2.4) to Thud (2.6), establish yum package repository, and create a base set of disk images on common embedded targets.

TDOA TIMESTAMP CAPTURE IP MODULE

TDOA is based upon a technique called multilateration. Multilateration estimates the location of a wireless emitter, and the target position is determined by the time difference between signals arriving at multiple receivers.

IMPROVING BER WITH MACHINE LEARNING

Use a neural network to decrease the amount of uncertainty in the P-HMM and strengthen the confidence in HDLC bits while leaving the random message bits untouched. By decreasing bit error in HDLC, error correction codes should have an easier time decoding the important messages.

PTPD CHARACTERIZATION OF PICOZED UNITS

Initiate a ptpd synchronization process across 4 PicoZed units, collect offset data for time intervals, and gather & analyze statistics of offset for each clock to demonstrate performance.

GNU RADIO + REDHAWK DEVELOPMENT

Integrate GNU Radio with REDHAWK

REDHAWK JICD

Adding domain-awareness into the Redhawk-codegen, option for JICD in the IDE, add request/reply for domain-awareness information, incorporate REDHAWK into AppGEO, display device status in the Developer GUI, request and receive a snapshot from a device, and tune a device from the Developer GUI.

PSD band suppressor, FINS register verification, Window function, FINS schema verification

LFM SIGNAL GENERATOR

Generate a chirp signal modeled by: y = sin(s2*t2 + s1*t + s0)

ITAR, 802.11, & TESTING

Geon compliance with ITAR, 802.11 specification (scramble, convolutional encoding, puncturing, insertion of dummy bits, Viterbi decoder, descramble)
